I never truly understood how much healthcare in the US costs until I got Appendicitis in October. I'm a 20 year old guy. Thought other people should see this to get a real idea of how much an unpreventable illness costs in the US.

The cover page of sorts. You can see the original total up at the top. Thankfully I was still on my dad’s insurance for another month or so. $55,029,.31 would have been way too much for me to pay on my own. Then again $11,119.53 is still a ton at this time in my life.

The services I received. I think you can see how outrageous some of these costs are. Such as the Recovery Room that I was in for maybe two hours. Or the Room and Board that I had for one night. Or maybe the $4,500 worth of anesthesia they supposedly used on me.

The rest of the services. $16,000 for the actual surgery.

Not a lot of people know but some medicine can run up 1,000+ per dose. Also, room and board can be costly, some might not think that. But when my son was in NICU it was 1,000 bucks a day... yes a day. Does not include medicine, nursing, and doctors.

All you people with "FREE" health care have no idea what it's really costing you. Most of the cost of health care in the US is due to government control and regulations. If the government takes over, those costs won't disappear; they'll just be paid in another way -- usually through taxes or inflation.

Of course, it also helps to have a 3rd-rate military that is totally incapable of defending you from anything more powerful than a flock of angry geese.

That's because americans sue everybody for everything. So hospitals need to prepare for legal costs.

Canada 0.00$, Portugal 0 - Free health care seems to be a great thing - so the doctors, nurses, etc. in all these countries are volunteers who do not receive pay?
Or are the costs much the same as everywhere else and are just obscured by the fact you pay not directly to the hospital but to the government? Do you people don't understand all the money must come from somewhere (or someone)? I despise the current US health care system (with or without obama care) but making the government to pay you bills won't make them disappear.

iman,
That's what health insurance is meant for.

This is shocking.

In England it would have been free, but in saying that - and coincidentally - I just read on the news this morning they are going to start charging non UK residents for NHS services. It's crazy how many people go to the UK purely to use its free medical system.

And to mirror that, a reported 46,000 Canadians (in 2011 alone) came down to the states, opting to actually PAY for medical services when they already get it for free. I don't get it...

EDIT (Yep, sorry that you can't handle facts there, bitter random downvoter. The truth hurts. :( )

"That's because americans sue everybody for everything."

Can we sue you for spouting off stereotyped nonsense obtained by foreign brainwashing? Because that'll be a sure-win right there.

"America, land of the free"

That doesn't mean everything here is FREE, you ninny...

"AND these americans STILL refuse OBAMACARE?"

YES. Miillions of people were forced to pay for that expedited bullsh*t program and lost their already FREE insurance they had through their workplaces, hundreds of dollars every month for something they already had for FREE. Jesus f*cking Christ. It blows my mind how many people in here today act like they know what they're talking about...

Everyone pays for healthcare one way or another. Americans just pay way more than everyone else. We also attract the best doctors from all over the world to our hospitals. So, as with all man-made situations, there's pros and cons.

"THESE" Americans refuse ObamaCare because ObamaCare is not the solution. ObamaCare adds another problem to many problems American have to deal with. ObamaCare works on the assumption that more young Americans buy their insurance but do not use it so that others with pre-existing conditions, elderly, sick ... can use it. Those (young) who are now buying the insurance do so because if they don't, they'll be fined. Who are now buying insurance are more likely to use it (They don't want to waste it, don't they?). And are these buyers rich or poor? If they are poor, they will have government' subsidies.
Another problem is civil liberty.

Government: "Hey. I have this wonderful product I want you to buy from me. If you don't, I'm gonna use government power to fine the sh*t out of you".

What's next? Every family of three will not be allowed to live in a house no bigger than 1,600 square feet because that's the average for everyone?

OldOllie,
Nope, most of the costs in the American Health Care system are down to private insurance companies and private hospitals wanting to make money.

I lived in the US for 10 years, so I suggest take a look at your payslip. You pay more per month for the insurance your employer takes right out of your check than I pay in NHS contributions, and you STILL have co-pays etc.

When I lived in the US, I had 'Good' insurance through my employer. It still cost me $60 to see my doctor, my diabetes meds cost $400 a month, and a two day stay in hospital for a kidney infection cost me $17,000 AFTER insurance.

Now, my NI contributions are 60% less than my insurance contributions in the US, and ALL my medical care is free.

Yeah, you go on defending a system where they charge you seven and a half grand to sit in a recovery room for a couple hours, and I'll continue calling you an idiot from a country that actually PROTESTS the idea of free healthcare for all.

Oh, and congrats on being proud of your government spending more on defense than all of Europe combined, despite not facing any actual military threat.

I, too, would be proud if over 50,000 of my countrymen were dying every year from easily treatable diseases, knowing that my government were spending 682 billion dollars a year to defend me from no one in particular.

...but after all, North Korea managed a missile test that NEARLY didn't spiral instantly into the sea last year, so it'll be worth it, I'm sure.
