Hey, my city has cycle lanes on the streets too, but people don't walk there.
They use the sidewalk, they don't walk on the street !!!

In the US there's a company called Air Zounds that makes an air horn attached to a refillable plastic bottle. You pump it up with a bike tire pump (it has a Shrader valve) and get 50-60 blasts from it.
The first day I used it it kept me from getting pushed into oncoming traffic by a bus. Worth every bit of the $19.95 I paid for it.
