This phenomenon isn't that unusual. When a river has a bulging section, the water in that section moves in a circular pattern. When it freezes, the circulating water forms a disk of ice that rotates with the water beneath it. Since it spins continuously and rubs up again the static ice, it forms a nearly perfect circle as if it were being turned on a lathe. 05
