Not that different to scan as you shop that we have in the UK. It's a hand-held scanner, not built into the basket, and you bag as you shop. But same idea. This was trialled as far back as the early 90s.

So no more cashier jobs in a world with inreasing population.
Soon there will be no need for drivers (trains, autos etc.), lots of factories already are mechanized and we will have to kill each other as a job interview.

We have a self checkout at our local supermarket. Every single time I've used it, it has screwed up, and I've had to wait for a clerk to come and unscrew it. I go to the human checkout clerks, but every 6 months or so, I try the automated system. It's been 3 years now, and they still haven't gotten it to work.
