So no cutting a wedge into the trunk? Looks a weird way to cut down a tree to me.

That looks like a tree that has rotted from the inside due to beetle kill. The U.S. Forestry Dept. lets people cut down huge swaths of that for fire wood up here in Alaska since it's not good for lumber and is quite a fire hazard. They call those beetle kill trees 'widow makers' cause they split up the length of the trunk in a spiral and come down like spears impaling people.
