actually, they'd have been ok if the lightning had hit the car because it is made out of metal and has a roof (ie not a convertible). In this case the car acts like a faraday cage and the lightning deflects around the vehicle and not through it. Cars are a good place to be safe when there's lightning about, keep the windows up and don't touch any exposed metal on the inside.
