seeing as they had a good idea of the probable outcome it was a little selfish to take the risk and destroy a bridge that many other people probably rely on daily. They should have found another safer route.

This bridge isn't old. That wood is practically new, having very little weathering on it.

The bridge probably would have held if they had balanced the load in the truck. The load tilted the truck to the right, so the driver steered left to counterbalance and came off of the runners. The runners distribute the weight over at least 5 cross members. Once off the runners, all of the weight on each tire was pressing on just a single cross member at a time.

As monkfish1968 said, these jerks put their convenience over the health and welfare of what is probably many, many people who needed this bridge. They didn't take time to check their load. They probably could have even removed the load and carried it across the bridge to make the truck lighter.
