seems a bit overengineered just to detroy a hdd.mine got destroyed once sitting in its case inside the pc. i wasnt that happy about it as these guys

Not hugely effective to be honest. Most hard drives have multiple platters, and use both sides of each platter. So this has destroyed maybe a quarter or less of the data.
