Something interesting that I've learned as an American living abroad for 5 years - I used to actually feel embarrassed to tell people where I was from. I had been so indoctrinated (in my OWN country) about how the rest of the world laughed at us, and we were too over the top, how we were nothing but friendly-fire and war-for-oil. And I was actually set straight by my English friends, who told me to show my pride in my country (and the English know about pride in one's country).
Don't give a crap about perceived faults by those who don't even live there. You want to be "over the top"? Put American sauce on your bacon wrapped cheese fries. You want to drive something with more then a 1.5L engine? Don't worry if other people gripe and moan. Was it good for us to help our allies in WWI, to fight the genocidal Germans and Japanese in WWII, to aid the Koreans AND Vietnamese (at their request) when the Communist Chinese invaded, to fight for Kuwait (our ally) when Iraq invaded, to defend our way of life against Radical Islam and to fight the countries to willingly harbor them? YES. We certainly don't always do it perfectly, but nobody does. Are we perfect? NO. Does that mean you can't love your country and culture with an undying love? Of course not. Not being like Europe, or Asia, or anybody else is GOOD.
I'm an American, and I'm allowed to be proud of my country.

I am from the U.S. and I can fully sympathize with the worlds view on us. As an insider, I can say this country is more fractured and pathetic than it may seem from the outside.

,
But when people complain about "Those Americans (or 'Muricans if they're trolling)", they're not referring to Canadians, or Mexicans, or Brazilians, they're talking specifically about residents of The United States of America, or "Americans" for short.
And in this part of the world, we go by the 7-continent model:
North America
South America
Europe
Asia
Africa
Australia
Antactica
You yourself just said "read about it", so Wiki the word "continent" and see what you get. Different parts of the world are taught that there are anywhere from 4,5,6,7 continents...
And "America the Beautiful" was written in the 1800's, so it's not like we just invented the name "America" to piss off people on the internet. It's been around awhile.
