The closest most of us 'round here will ever get to outer space is blogging about the Lunar X Prize, so our inner astronauts get rather giddy any time an amateur makes it to the cusp of the gravity well. The above photos were taken by the Meteotek team, a teacher and his four students from the IES La Bisbal school in Catalonia, Spain. The group designed and launched a balloon kitted out with a Nikon Coolpix and custom built electronics, intending to get some shots at 30,000 feet. Well exceeding their expectations, the $80 digicam (held aloft by a $60 latex balloon) reached over 100,000 feet, at which point it lost inflation and fell to the earth.

Maybe we're just not intelligent enough to have a "motel 6" up there by now. We went to the moon. Get over it. Too many people think that we should be in flying cars and have sentient robots 40 years after the moon. C'mon. We're a SLOW species.

Besides, that's not what these pics were about, were they? Both the conspiracy theorists and the people who are against them can be pretty ignorant.

Leperconsean: Please stop trolling, and if you believe there is a radiation belt between us and the moon, prove it. You know as much as the rest of us "sheeple", and that's it. I'm an amateur astronomer, and yes, I've seen "space junk", as we like to call it. Tools and such that were leftover from space repairs.

Ken: "if u wana go to outer space just apply to nasa u dump losers"
Very, very few people are qualified to go to space. You have to be a certain height, have a certain IQ, and be extremely athletically fit, for starts. Not many people can tread water in a spacesuit and tennis shoes for half an hour and then pass an IQ test with scores upwards of 130. I honestly believe I could have been an astronaut, I am in perfect physical shape and have an IQ above 130, but I am too tall to apply to be an astronaut. You have to be below 6'3, I am 6'5.

So, How exactly is it that one applies to be an astronaut for this world? 88

Looks like it was a lot of fun.
There will always be people who attack other people on-line.

Great idea and implementation!

As for the idiots in the crowd saying we didn't go to the moon, take a look at this site http://www.clavius.org/index.h
tml Actually read it and think about it. If after that, you still don't think we went, check out the Japanese probe currently orbiting the moon, it has pictures of our trash and footprints. Then after all that, if you still don't believe it's true, you are absolutely hopeless and won't ever believe it because you are incredibly closed minded and illogical.

If you don't care to read through that site, at least read this. Yes there are the Van Allen Radiation Belts between here and the moon, but the Apollo trajectories went around the strongest part of them, the spacecraft was shielded against the most damaging radiation, and the speed of the craft meant the astronauts received a very short and thus low dosage. That's all the time I care to spend on educating you. If your too shortsighted to accept what happened, or at least do some intelligent research, there is little I can do to change your opinion.

I completely agree with you! You took the word right out of my mouth.
Why all the negitive comments. If you do not believe it then so be it but allow the rest of us to enjoy this without all the nasty comments. Keep those to yourself. I feel it was a great project and very much enjoyed it.

ok....all i got to say is that life and god are all fake. Theres no proof that god exist nor that evolution is how we are here today. If we all came from tiny organisms then where did they come from? What are the particles in atoms made of, and what are those particles that make the particles of atoms made? Why is there something instead of nothing? How are we here, How can anything exist? What was the first thing ever in the whole universe that made everything. Whats at the end of the universe? How can space go on forever? If it does stop then whats on the other side? There is so much we dont know and will never be answered in our life time. This is a good, neat, cool, and other (positive things) that this is why we find it interesting? We like it because it's unknown.

Why don't we have a motel 6 on the moon? I'll tell you why. Because the aliens have read this freakin' thread and determined that any species that would take a cool experiment by a bunch of high school students and turn it into a flame throwing diatribe on the reality of space travel is too freakin' dangerous to be allowed of their own little ball of dirt! So they've been messing with things to keep us from escaping and screwing up the rest of the galaxy!

AND RIGHTLY SO!!!!!

First-year Engineering students at the University of Colorado have been doing this for years. Not only do they have a camera aboard their payloads, but science experiments as well. http://spacegrant.colorado.edu
