I don't get the media outlet spasms over this. De Niro is 3 inches taller than Pacino without the platforms, and this is a technique used time and again in films. It's done for dramatic effect, because a character was known to be taller or shorter than average, or because the actor himself is shorter than the other actors who'll be onscreen at the same time.
