In what sense do you mean by "true?" Photography is the propagandist's legal tender. It's as easily manipulated and loosely interpreted as any other visual art and actually distinguishes itself as the most effective deception of all. The subject of the picture may be a real thing but really they're just props and actors on the photographer's stage. Mistaking the image for the thing itself is, as the proverb goes, like thinking the finger that points at the moon is the moon itself.
