Spetsnaz is a general term for "special forces" in Russian, literally "special purpose".
And these are the photos of the veterans of Russian Spetsnaz.
The portraits were made by Russian photographer Dima Beliakov.

This is what the 'Great' countries do to thousands of their youth. I 'd rather see a picnic of retired teachers and nurses.

The Russians could never win in Afghanistan because of a combination of Geostrategic reasons (the United States and Saudi Arabia were operating a massive Terrorist onslaught against Afghanistan from Pakistan: the CIA constructed a series of vast Terrorist training/supply bases all along the Pakistan-Afghan Border on the Pakistan side, and Pakistan was, and is, a NATO vassal-state. So, for the Russians to "win" they would have to annihilate the Terrorist bases, and that would mean attacking Pakistan, and that would provide the USA with exactly the pretext it required to drag it's European NATO vassal-states into the campaign, and this confrontation could easily have escalated into WW3) and their crippling manpower shortages: all the way right up until the very end in Afghanistan (where they massively increased the number of their soldiers there to one-hundred-thousand in a last-ditch "Surge" to try and "screen" the Pakistan/Afghan Border, they never had more than fifteen-thousand soldiers there at any time. They killed more than two million USA-backed Islamic Terrorists, but every Terrorist they killed was immediately replaced via the CIA from Pakistan, Chechenya, Egypt, etc, etc.
