#20 Bands have done that for ages. Much lighter, and much easier to transport from city to city, and they weren't being used for anything but show anyway. They'd bring one or two small real amps, but that would be all that they'd need.

Rumor has it that Eddie van Halen would normally bring a little practice amp about the size of a microwave for concert tours, and just let the house PA supply all the volume.
