These actors were paid big salaries for their movie roles, but unfortunately the investment didn't have a great return. These are the actors who were overpaid in 2016.

10. Bradley Cooper
Box office return: $12.10 for every $1 paid
Joy did not impress at the box office, grossing just $101 million on an estimated $60 million budget. Aloha fared even worse, failing to earn back its $37 million budget.

9. Julia Roberts
Box office return: $10.80 for every $1 paid
Only woman on the ranking makes this unenviable list from modest ticket booth tallies for Money Monster and Mother’s Day. Though her total pay is far lower than that of the men on the list, poor box office results damage her return ratio.

8. Leonardo DiCaprio
Box office return: $9.90 for every $1 paid
DiCaprio’s outsized paychecks for star vehicles such as The Revenant mean that even when the film performs well at the box office (grossing $533 million on a $135 million budget, in this case), his ROI does not seem as impressive. However, his last two films, The Revenant and Wolf of Wall Street, earned him Best Actor Oscar nods and wide critical acclaim—a different reward valued deeply by some investors. DiCaprio eventually won an Academy Award this year for the Alejandro González Iñárritu-directed feature.

7. Mark Wahlberg
Box office return: $9.20 for every $1 paid
Daddy's Home was a hit, but his average still suffers from 2014's The Gambler, which grossed just a little more than its $25 million estimated production budget.

6. Adam Sandler
Box office return: $7.60 for every $1 paid
Though most of this funnyman's new movies are now made for Netflix, he is eligible for the list thanks to 2015's Pixels and makes the cut with modest returns fromBlended and Grown Ups 2. In 2014, he signed an agreement worth an estimated $240 million that circumvents costly theatrical releases and distributes Sandler's comedies directly to his target audiences—home video couch potatoes.

5. George Clooney
Box office return: $6.70 for every $1 paidHail, Caesar! was enjoyed by critics but fared modestly at the box office; Money Monster played a little better. But Clooney's average takes a big hit from 2015's Tomorrowland, which barely grossed more than its eye-watering $190 million budget.

4. Will Ferrell
Box office return: $6.50 for every $1 paidZoolander 2 earned a dismal 23% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and managed just $56 million at the ticketing booth--on a $50 million budget. He ranked third on 2015's list.

3. Channing Tatum
Box office return: $6 for every $1 paidMagic Mike XXL was a veritable hit, notching $122 million on a $14.8 million budget, by Tatum's three movie average is still dragged down by 2015 flop Jupiter Ascending. He ranked 7th on last year's list.

2. Will Smith
Box office return: $5 for every $1 paidConcussion was no knockout: An Oscar nod evaded him and in theaters, the movie barely tallied its $34 million production costs. Smith's outsized paydays, coupled with recent box office disappointments, translates to poor returns. He ranked 5th on 2015's list.

1. Johnny Depp
Box office return: $2.80 for every $1 paidFor the second year in a row, Depp is Hollywood's most overpaid actor. Alice Through the Looking Glass bombed at the box office, grossing just $300 million on a $170 million budget. It hit theatres in May--the same month a judge ordered a restraining order against Depp after his wife alleged he physically and verbally abused her. The couple reached a $7 million divorce settlement in August. The damning accusations did not impact his earnings during our scoring period but look set to damage his box office prospects for months to come.
