It's hard to bring oneself to kill another person. The blank allows each shooter to aim to kill and to pull the trigger because they can believe they will be the one who won't kill the prisoner.
There is also the use of non-lethal wax bullets that provide recoil.

no it is entirely true and yes you can tell with one round but when a row of people fire, you dont know as easily.
