When my family moved to Alaska, I attended Palmer Middle School in the small town of Palmer, Alaska. A liberal family from southern California moved in to town a year latter and the mother was shocked when her daughter came home with her cheerleader uniform with the initials P.M.S. (Palmer Middle School). She was so use to getting her way she demanded that the school board change the name to Palmer Junior High School. Outraged parents threatened to take their children out of school if the school board caved in to this mouthy 'Outsider'. After all, it had been called Palmer Middle School for more than 25 yrs. So, to try to please everyone, the school board changed the name to Palmer Junior Middle School. Some of my friends got taken out of Palmer school district and bused to near-by Wasilla school district. It was really sad.
