#19 This list is fairly pointless. None of these actors ever had Oscar-worthy performances, except maybe Downey in Chaplin, or Oldman in JFK. Why the f*ck Cruise is even mentioned is beyond me. One could argue for Rain Man, but I would say he was being his normal self - a douche bag - so it wasn't really acting.

What the actual f*ck are you talking about? Edward Norton in Fight Club? Gary Oldman in Leon? Johnny Depp in Black Mass? Downey is Downey, but the rest definitely deserve an oscar...

Well, the actual f*ck, as you say, is of course only opinion. Though the many people who nominate and make the final decisions on academy awards apparently agree with me, I do not take refuge in the false security of consensus; my own opinion is enough for me.

To refute directly just one of your points, Edward Norton's character in Fight Club, as he confronts his boss with threats of exposure of the company's wrongdoing, is a most unbelievable portrayal. Norton's delivery made me literally laugh out loud as he tried to play the psycho/insomniac. A 90-year-old grandmother on hospice would not have been frightened in the least, and at that seen right through threats that were so obviously empty. He looked far more like a desperate man trying to bluff his way out of a desperate situation.

I imagine he tried to play it low-key thinking that less psycho equals more psycho. This I think is extremely difficult to achieve on film. Norton is not that kind or caliber of actor, and it certainly did not work here.

For the sake of contrast, I have never seen a better portrayal of a low-key psychopath than Ralph Fiennes as Nazi Captain Amon Goeth in Schindler's List. To me this is the most evil human character ever filmed. Scary as they are, the moments where he takes long-distance pot shots at camp prisoners with his rifle are not when the people would have been most afraid of him; it would have been when he was showing beneficence and kindness, as he once or twice did with his Jewish servant-girl. She was quite literally petrified with fear, because she never knew when the he was about to erupt. His monologue in the basement with her is absolutely spine-chilling. That, my friend, is Oscar-worthy. In fact he did win, for Best Supporting Actor.

Playing devil's advocate, you should have probably mentioned The Painted Veil, which was much more suited for Norton's talents, diminutive stature, intellectual poise, calm demeanor, and soft-spoken tone. Yet even in this role, one can see he did not have broad enough range to match the intensely powerful, subdued, storm-below-the-calm emotions of his character, Walter Fane, from the book by W. Somerset Maugham. Still, in my opinion, this was his best role. Fight Club was by comparison a joke.

The dog it was, that died. Shame they did not put that part in the film.
