I am going to go out on a limb and guess that is not gross profit and probably gross revenue which means the movie lost about $40m.

Yeah, but they lost 41 million!

And Waterworld is always called a "flop"for some reason, when it's not even close to being one. Here are the actual numbers:

Budget: $175 million
Total Gross: $264,218,220 M (not $88 M).

That's almost a $90 million dollar profit...

(The total gross is halfway down the page in that link- ignore the domestic gross at the top, which is the number they gave in this article)

Uh-oh. Brendan Fraser was involved in two of these (#6 and #15.) Were there any other repeat performers?

keep in mind that for top blockbuster (like iceage, ironman, pirates of the caribbean and lone ranger) the marketing budget is like half of the total production budget.
= lone ranger pissed away 100M on commercials, adds and happy meal toys

the lone ranger was a flop because it sucked. Waterworld was decent, 47 Ronin was decent, but the rest were snoozers...

As you can see in your link, those numbers are only based on grosses within USA... If they didn't ignored the rest of the world, all those movies made profits

No, I checked all the others before I posted that, and they all reflect the total world-wide gross. None of them profited, other than Waterworld. And nobody ignored the rest of the world, AC (a European site) just made a mistake on the one.
