Stopping at a gas station to refuel your car could become a thing of the past if Highways England has anything to say about it. They've created a road that will charge an electric car simply by driving the car over it. The technology uses special electromagnetic field generating equipment to keep electric cars going in hopes of making a more sustainable road network for England.

Highways England plans to test this technology over 18 months before a decision is made to move the project to public roads

Electric cables are buried under the road to generate electromagnetic fields which are caught by a coil inside the vehicle and converted into electricity

The government is already committing £500 million over the next five years to keep Britain at the forefront of this technology

It will only charge specially equipped cars. Hopefully more/most electric vehicle manufacturers agree on and implement a common standard. This is a great idea.

Its not new technology. Its been used to charge electric busses at bus stops.

What one should calculate is the cost of electricity provided by the goverment to charge thousands of cars on a daily basis. You could not charge the people for it, as you could not meter it. Same reason tesla lost his funding.

Add the fact that current electric cars are NOT more enviromentally friendly or cheaper to run over long term than current fuel powered cars. Reason being is that the batteries are extremely toxic waste, and they can cause more enviromental damage than the CO2. And since they need replacement every 4-5 years, the cost you saved on fuel is negated by buying a battery for several thousand.

Add the CO2 from cars production and the CO2 from the electricity production (since most of it is from coal) and you would be better off driving your old car until battery technology improves considerably, at least if you care for the enviroment.

my thoughts exactly Aindy, but I'm pretty sure they'll come up with some elaborate way to charge anyone who wants to use them.
