California is currently experiencing one of the worst droughts in history and they're doing everything they can to try and conserve their water supply. A few days ago 20,000 shade balls were dumped into the Los Angeles Reservoir to protect the drinking water from the sun which would cause it to evaporate. This tactic will help the state conserve up to 300 million gallons of water per year.

Too bad the genius who came up with this idea never took a physics class. The black balls will absorb solar energy heating the water and actually increase the rate of evaporation.

But thank you for playing our game of "Waste the Taxpayers' Money!"

It's actually not for the evaporation, but to protect the clorine in the watersupply from breaking down in bromides.
