This mechanism was designed to help drivers who rely more on their left leg. But it looks more dangerous than it does helpful.

that's old school. It works pretty good but a little more advanced are available today. The plus for the one shown is another driver (with both legs) can drive it by just flipping the rod onto the floor.
btw, I'm a right side AK myself. I've used this type in pic. before. But today I just drive left foot on accelerator , still easy to hit brake pedal. Your brain/muscle memory adapts quick to such changes.
