Koolickles

“Koolickles, which are basically pickles brined in the various flavors of Kool-Aid powder. Mostly found in the Delta region of Mississippi. Google it, it is a real thing.”

“Grits. I mean, I’m from the South. Many people put lots of butter and/or salt in it… Basically just a gooey mess.”

“Chitterlings smell horrible but taste pretty good. If you can get over the fact that you’re eating pig intestines, then you’ll be fine.”

“Cream-based casseroles. Like this tater tot casserole recipe, which calls for:
Ground beef
Frozen Tater Tots
1 can cream of mushroom soup
1 can cream of chicken soup
1 can of evaporated milk”

Red-Eye Gravy, aka Poor Man’s Gravy

“Red-eye gravy. It is salty ham juices with coffee (or sometimes cola) mixed in. Yuck. I think someone, long ago, spilled their drink in the pan drippings and decided it would do as gravy.”

15 31 Of The Weirdest Foods You Can Eat In America (31 pics)

Gumbo

“I’m from Louisiana, and I think gumbo is really odd. It’s just different types of food mixed together. It has things like crawfish, shrimp, corn, and other random things that we want to put in it. I really don’t care for gumbo, so I never eat it.”

16 31 Of The Weirdest Foods You Can Eat In America (31 pics)

Fry Sauce

“Fry sauce is pretty weird, I guess — it’s ketchup and mayonnaise mixed! And I know it’s only around in certain parts of the U.S. It’s so great, though, I love it!”

The Doughnut Burger

“Concoctions: Bacon Smores. Burgers between doughnuts. Fried cereal cheese puffs. I mean, I see half these weird food combinations and it’s just revolting. American food gets such a bad rep and these things explain why. However, I will attest that throughout the U.S. there actually are really amazing homemade and healthy traditional food representing those areas. Not all the U.S. food is a sugar-injected, deep-fried nightmare.”

23 31 Of The Weirdest Foods You Can Eat In America (31 pics)

Mayonnaise

“Mayonnaise is basically just egg yolks and vinegar, mixed. It’s too thick for its own good, smells of rotten eggs, and, its complexion is the only thing whiter than Iggy Azalea. 0/10, would not eat.”

24 31 Of The Weirdest Foods You Can Eat In America (31 pics)

Peanut Butter and Banana Sandwiches

“PEANUT BUTTER AND BANANA SANDWICHES. Why on earth would you put banana slices on bread?! So weird!”

25 31 Of The Weirdest Foods You Can Eat In America (31 pics)

Rocky Mountain Oysters

“Rocky Mountain oysters: If you can’t call something what it actually is (testicles), maybe we shouldn’t be eating it.”

26 31 Of The Weirdest Foods You Can Eat In America (31 pics)

Cincinnati Chili

“Cincinnati chili — spaghetti with chili with cheese. Could not be more gross.”

27 31 Of The Weirdest Foods You Can Eat In America (31 pics)

Chicken Gizzards

“Southern food in general can be a bit unsettling for many, even within America, but outside the South: grits, cornbread, boudin, chicken gizzards, crawfish, butter beans, fried green tomatoes, okra (fried, boiled, or pickled), peanuts in Coke.”

28 31 Of The Weirdest Foods You Can Eat In America (31 pics)

Pickled Pigs Feet

“I think this is just a Southern thing, but pickled pig feet and pickled eggs. When I was a kid, people used to sell them in their ice cream trucks. My mom used to eat it all the time. Whenever she bit into it, juice from the pig feet would drip, making a mess. The smell is also unsettling too.”

I honestly don't get how 75% of the things on this list -- especially meat loaf and gumbo -- are considered to be gross in any way. This is one of the most bizarre things I have ever seen on acid cow...

many of these things are very tasty. Meatloaf is limited only by the ingredients you use.as are many of the home made items.
I was amused to read mayonnaise was invented by the french..........

Mayonnaise - that sounds like the weirdest of the lot. It's a good thing it hasn't "left" america and made it around the world. Oh wait...

if grits is just a "gooey mess" then you don't know how to cook it.

I from the US and I wouldn't touch many of these things. Though many aren't that odd. Burgoo and gumbo are just stews. Pretty much every culture has a common stew.

Peeps are just marshmallow. Nothing strange about those. Common confection you can find all over the world. These just happen to be shaped like birds.

Surprisingly, there are only a few items in here that came from America. Even less are the number of items that are eaten only in America. To whoever the commenter is - Sweet potato with marshmallows is called Sweet Potato Casserole and it is very, very old and European. Pigs feet are basically a Russian dish, mayonnaise is French etc.

Obviously the person who posted this knows nothing of US cuisine or country cooking. First of all mayonnaise is egg and oil not egg and vinegar. Some people may use a small amount of vinegar in it. Secondly, most of dishes are from the south and are not readily eaten on a daily basis the US population. That's like saying everyone in China eats bugs.
