The NYPD Launches An Innovative Program Called ShotSpotter (4 pics)

The NYPD has just launched ShotSpotter. It's a program that will notify the police when there are gunshots in the area even if no one reports them or calls 911. This will allow police to attend to crime more rapidly and hopefully prevent gun related deaths in the city.

Dallas has had this for a few years, hasn't made any real change in crime. probably not worth the money and manpower to operate it, but it's just tax payer and fed's money......and I have no idea how this will prevent gun deaths like the caption says. The weapon has already fired and hit the target when this toy notifies of a shot fired.

I remember hearing about this being developed in California back in the early 90's.
I remember something about the developers having trouble getting the system to distinguish gunshots from, say, a firecracker or car backfiring. Maybe they worked the bugs out.
