And I've heard from a very smart person that it's supposed to be pronounced NAHR-fk, although that sounds so stupid that I'll go on pronouncing it like everybody does and say NOR-folk.

Thanks for clearing that up morrel2.
By the way I'm tired of hearing people call us A-Meddy-Kahns.

having been to most of these places, a simply talking to the locals should give you adequate clues to how things are pronounced in the area you are in. Worked for me...

Most of the differences are simply accent.
For example, many people pronounce my state Minnesota, like it's spelled.
We here, in local accent, say "Minn-uh-soh-da"...p
ronounce the "T" and you're clearly not from here.

But really, who gives a crap, if everyone knows what you mean to say?

Actually, if you are Thai, you wouldn't call it Bangkok in any way, shape or form. You'd call it by its Thai name, which is Krung Thep (pronounced koongTEHp).

Well, as for Budapest, both pronunciations are incorrect. It is actually pronounced as
bu-da-pesht there is no emphasis on the u like in boo but is pronounced like o in do or to.

#1 is indeed true. I'm from Melbourne, and I cannot stand when people mispronounce it.
