17 is the legal age of consent in most states.I am on this dude's side. Its not that serious.

in Texas here the age doesn't mean anything if they are a current student of yours, it may also mean at the same school without being in your class, but that part is not clear.
But I agree, why did they talk and make a case? High school really is different now. Or at least the male students are....
