delorarose, not necessarily. You only need to reflect some light on the surface. Some light could pass through, bounce off the cornea, and by the time it's passed back through the semi-reflective surface, the intensity of light (the image of the iris) is insignificant compared to that which was initially reflected. Think of looking through a window at night. You see your reflection better because the outside light is too little to wash out your reflection.
