If you've got insurance consider yourself lucky. This person had to stay in a hospital for 6 days and it ended up costing them $80,000. Don't worry, the 13 page bill breaks it all down.

I'm glad I live in a country with free healthcare. I cannot understand how Americans accept having to pay for it all.

,
We don't have a choice. There is BIG money in the entire healthcare industry, from the insurance companies who foot most of the bill like the one shown above to the hospitals which are run as for-profit corporations nowadays. We recently passed a healthcare reform act that was supposed to reduce the amount charged for even the simplest procedures and move us closer toward universal healthcare, but one particular political party who thinks charging this amount is a "freedom" issue fought tooth and nail to leave open a corporation's "right" to charge whatever the hell it wants. So... nothing really changed.

This is the bill before the insurance pays. Its not what he paid. It also doesnt say what treatment he got. If he got surgery, it could cost this much anywhere (and morphine is usually for patients with surgery). Difference being goverment or insurance pays for it.

$25 for ONE 500mg Naproxen tablet, which was charged multiple times.
$5 for "Ferrous Sulfate" which is just an iron tablet, which they gave him over and over again.
I'm guessing they cost about 25c and 5c per tablet, so 100 fold increase in prices.....
