I take it back. The american football fact is true, published in the wall street journal a few years back. This is the time the ball is actually in play. Its related to a fact that they show more repeats than actual game time (17min repeats, 11min game-time). And then theres 1hour of ads. And they show less ads in europe.

So, there is the proof of why american football sucks. Turning an 11 minute game into 3hrs... i mean no more explanation needed. Stop watching it.
