#1 - Soldiers are given all sorts of drugs. Its just something that has been kept historically. Vikings and Celts went into battle under the influence of hallucinogenics. Every large war soldiers were supplied with almost any drug available. Talking more modern times, we can mention:WW1, WW2, Vietnam, Gulf War 1 and 2 (probably more too...).

Side effects of these drugs are unknown. Hence anything can happen to soldiers, but since they signed up to kill and be killed, nonone higher up will care about it.
