#5 Actually, the California state animal is the California grizzly bear. Its been on the state flag since 1846 and officially adopted in 1911 as the state animal. The last one was seen in 1924 and is probably extinct.

capt.huffnpuff, there are many categories. California's official "marine mammal" is the gray whale. A lot of states have one or more animals in different categories, like state reptile, amphibian, bird, mammal, etc. Texas has 3 state mammals (nine-banded armadillo, Mexican free-tailed bat, Texas longhorn cow,) AND 2 domestic mammals (blue lacy dog and American quarter horse.)
