The roots of that type of cactus are very close to the surface. There have been many reports of tourists going up to stand next to one of them for a picture, and unknowingly are destroying the roots supporting the cactus, and as a result it falls on them.

these are a protected plant. if one is growing on your property you have to have permission from your city to remove it. (as a home owner in AZ, I'm glad I do not have one of these on my property!)
