I agree, #1 is very cool. And you don't have to worry about the expansion/shrinking of the concrete causing cracks. Very clever actually. And far more inexpensive than placing individual blocks.

#1 is called concrete stamping and is commonly used to keep concrete from cracking when the weather causes it to swell and recede.
