#39 The raid on Dresden is considered by many to be questionable at best. The allies bombed Dresden late in the war. The official post war report said "The raid achieved the military objective, without excessive loss of civilian life" yet the largest raid targeted the city itself with 50% of the total tonnage of explosives dropped. The important military targets in the suburbs were not bombed. There was little or no reason to bomb the city center.

The controversy created of the fire bombing by the RAF and USAF of cities such as Dresden was an appalling act in itself. The young crews who carried out such missions where coming home against all odds and their memory has only just been officially recognised.
History can teach many things but we will never be in a position to judge those who at the time knew the Germans were finally on the back-foot and saw this as an opportunity to end the war. After all the suffering inflicted on the Allied countries, they had the reasons and experience to make the decision to finally crush the enemy. The A-bomb was the same in my view. Imagine if Japan or Germany had developed it first. Imagine if WW2 raged for a further 20 years. It doesn't bare thinking about.

Even if war only involved those it appealed to, it still would not be anything good.
