It's not free access. It's a very secure area. Has a 30km exclusion zone (with a border style entry) and same with a 10km exclusion zone. You can go to it via a tour (easiest way... but it's over $100US for the day tour leaving from Kiev). You go to a small town, then to Chernobyl plant, then to Prypat. I was there this past June. Sad, but interesting. Still very radio active.
For example, a typical radiation level reading should be .12 (decimal 12). I saw readings as high as 96 (not decimal 96, but actually 96!!)
