I prefer seeing pictures of soldiers messing about and having fun, these are too serious...

.......because WW1 was such fun for everyone.

think of us in the trench
where we're lacking so much!
Think of, dear people,
the meaning of Lord's Prayers:
"Give us this day our bread" - it says
but it doesn't mention butter!

Think of those bravely fighting
persistently for the fatherland;
Turn of in great times
the small everyday worries!
Raise your sight to all of those
whom death took their dearest,
who can only with the salt of the tears
wet their daily bread today!

Don't you know that loud lamentation
increases the courage of the enemy?
You don't have to carry heavy burdens
at the secure stove of your home!
Instead of scolding and cursing,
the patriot should tell himself:
The loser does not enjoy cake
But the victor enjoys dry bread!
