I was born in South Carolina, Myrtle Beach to be specific. I grew up there just long enough to have a very thick southern accent ... then the family moved to, of all places, Cleveland Ohio. A very, Not-White city. I learned to fight very quickly.
Amazing was the hate I received just because of my accent.
I've lived in the north for so long my southern accent is all but gone. Just a few words give me away. I've been 'Yankee-ized' as my family back home likes to call it. I'm not from the north and I no longer fit in, in the south. Now I live in Alaska ... everybody has an 'accent' up here. Russian, Korean, Japanese, damn Texans, Minna-sotenze. Home sweet home.
