We need other forms of non-carbon energy produced on a mass scale to reduce greenhouse gasses. As much as I hate to admit it, nuclear energy is the most efficient non-carbon energy source, but it doesn't work for every situation.

Oil companies buy new technology for their own interests. They recognize their infrastructure would become obsolete, costing trillions and untold job losses. When the internal combustion engine was invented, there was no downside because there wasn't a suitable alternative.
