"Only a force 2 hurricane". Maybe not the "perfect storm" but it hit the wrong place, the largest city in the US and 8th most populace city in the world.
Katrina pales in comparison: "[Katrina] was the costliest natural disaster ... in the history of the United States. Among recorded Atlantic hurricanes, it was the sixth strongest overall. (Wikipedia)."
Costliest? Not any more.
New Orleans metro area: 1,167,000 population.
New York City metro area: 18,900,000 population.
New Orleans population density: 1,675/sq mi.
NYC population density: 27,243/sq mi.
The closing of the NY stock exchange sent shockwaves throughout the financial communities around the world.
Millions without power.
18,100 flights cancelled in the New York area, a major hub, with destinations around the world.
And the list goes on.
Fortunately the loss life is "minuscule" in Sandy compared to Katrina especially when you look at the population difference. That in itself is amazing.
