A quick check on Wikipedia suggests that this story might not be entirely true. Obviously Wikipedia isn't definitive, but might be worth taking this with a pinch of salt.

I have no doubt that Dr Naki was discriminated against, as a black man in RSA.
Nevertheless, he seems NOT to have been involved, and this is a political-correctness-inspired
revisionist heroic myth. Even if he was even in the operating room, the team of people involved was over 30 individuals. Barnaard is given the recognition as the lead surgeon, and 2 others are recognized for assisting. That means that 27 people AREN'T recognized for their role, and we KNOW they were there.
So if he wasn't 'recognized' it would hardly make him special.
