The town on Hashima Island was established in 1887 and it was a coal mining community. After the mine was shut down in 1974 the city was abandoned.

They filmed a large part of an episode of "Life After People" for Discovery channel here a few years ago. That was a good series.

The mine ended up mostly hidden under the buldings for the workers to live in.
I believe it held the record for the most people per area for many years prior to it's being shut down after the price of coal dropped too far.
The figures were 835 people per hectare for the whole island, or 1391 people per hectare for the residential area on its own.
As seen in the photos, mother nature is destroying it with some efficiency, and visiting is therefore forbidden due to the high insidence of falling masonry.
