A 2nd amendment like the one here in the US would have prevented a lot of this. Also, I believe, in the UK people regularly get arrested for defending themselves and their property. So whats a property owner to do?

While the property crime is serious it's notable that these riots have not injured many and nobody has died in them (discount Mark Duggan).

i dont think all of the people who did this were idiots, everyone should go out and demonstrate against those who get richer from betting on stock markets, stupid politicans who only try to get rich by lobbyism, corrupt systems, etc. but they should have lighted up the finace center, not the residential district. Setting cars and small shops on fire only hits the "poor", not those who got rich with the crisis.

it must be ok to demonstrate, maybe block some major streets or be on strike for some days... its really not ok to set something on fire...
