I think what is meant is that if the father had masturbated or used a condom, his semen would have never got in touch with his mother's egg cell and the son would have never been born. So the son says: "Thank you for my life, dad." That's how I understood it, but I'm not a man, so please excuse me if my interpretation is wrong.
