A decommissioned Australian navy frigate has been scuttled off the coast of New South Wales. HMAS Adelaide was sunk near Avoca beach, as hundreds of onlookers enjoyed a fireworks display to mark the occasion.The wreck will form the basis of an artificial reef that will generate millions of dollars in revenue for New South Wales state, a government official said.

not very exciting. I saw the US sink a ship like that once. It was sunk by planes dropping bombs. VERY cool.

Large ships are much harder to 'clean' before sinking. This sinking delayed once to remove wiring and lead paint. Enviromentalists wanted further decontamination but it was skuttled after an hour delay caused by a pod of dolphins in the area. She sunk in 2 minutes.

DocMcCoy, notice that the environmentalists didn't want to stop the sinking. They approve of it. They just wanted to minimize the poisonous elements that would defeat the purpose of the "reef", killing the animals instead of building a refuge.
