The patterns look surprisingly modern, even trendy; these are the very patterns I see silk screened onto the torsos of so many suburban hipsters.

Perhaps they were inspired by the popular Cubist movement of that time.

breaks up the ships silhouette from a distance so subs can't target them easily, and yes, it was effective given the quality of the optics of that era.

Repeat post.

Seeing as this was before radar, the paint jobs worked well, as it made the ships hard to spot and target via optical scopes.

AC should have a new post showing some of the other crazy ideas they did, like the BAT Bomb.

Looks more like modern art than war ships.
The camouflage works only from a certain distance of course.

this camo was used for bad recognition of ship size and distance ( and thus - speed )
made as a sort of optical illusion
