I think it's trying to say that for a weaker man, the strong drink or the brass knuckles may make you feel more courageous.

Many people only express violent thoughts or stand up against the odds when pissed up, and the addition of the brass knuckles may give a sober man the edge he feels he is missing.

In reality, if you can't take on an enemy bare handed, using only your hands, feet, knees, elbows, whatever, you shouldn't be there in the first place. Nothing wrong with using the environment around you to your advantage either, but you should be able to do it alone.

Life teaches us though, either avoid the situation, or ram them in the bollocks and get the fuck out of there. Life is short, don't go tempting fate.
