Are you trying to learn Spanish? Do you love playing video games? Why not combine the two activities and make your gaming sessions more productive at the same time? Thankfully, many games offer localization in Spanish.

I’ve picked out some of the best ones out of the bunch. For me, playing single-player games was a great way to familiarize myself with the language. Then, I switched to multiplayer games, which helped me communicate with some native Spanish speakers.

To play multiplayer games with native Spanish speakers, you need to switch your preferred game server to Mexico or NA-Central, which means that you play with a higher latency. To make sure your gaming sessions aren’t filled with lag and frustration, I recommend using an internet connection that caters to the U.S. Central region. Cox is a great option that offers high-speed internet with low latency and symmetrical speeds that are perfect for online gaming, especially on different servers. Plus, 24/7 support from Cox en español is helpful when it comes to choosing the best plans for your online gaming.

Now, without further ado, let’s look at my picks for the best games you should play to start learning Spanish.

1. Helldivers 2

1 6 Best Videogames to Start Learning Spanish

Helldivers 2 was one of the biggest game releases of 2024. And for good reason. This game is a co-op shooter masterpiece that features well-constructed gameplay. The game has a fantastic Spanish translation, which can be even more fun when played with friends.

In this game, every mission plays out differently, even if you've already played the same maps and objectives before. Every mission has optional objectives you need to complete within the time limit.

If you fail to reach the extraction area within the time limit, the ship leaves without you which means that you won't get any rewards for the mission. The game can be challenging, but also extremely rewarding, especially if you play with a group.

2. Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag

2 6 Best Videogames to Start Learning Spanish

Most of the Assassins Creed series has fantastic Spanish translations. However, I particularly like Black Flag, mainly because it’s one of the best games in the entire series.

It features scenery and gameplay that look straight out of Pirates of the Caribbean. The world is vast and beautiful. You explore a lot of it in your ship, which adds a huge amount of variety to the gameplay as you traverse the sea, as well as fight other pirate ships.

The game’s Spanish translation is exceptional, and there’s an entire section of the game that takes place in Havana, where the locals speak native Spanish.

3. Uncharted (Series)

3 6 Best Videogames to Start Learning Spanish

If you’re a PlayStation fan, you’ve probably already played the Uncharted games. If you haven’t, you need to play the entire series right now. The four mainstream games are some of the best action-packed adventure games you can play today.

The story follows Nathan Drake on his adventures to find lost treasures. The games feature a lot of puzzles, parkour, running, and gunning as well as action set pieces that are guaranteed to blow your socks off.

Uncharted’s Spanish dub is simply brilliant. Most of the jokes from the original English version are translated brilliantly, carrying the same impact as the original. Nathan and Sully’s actors give an amazing Spanish performance.

4. Horizon Zero Dawn & Forbidden West

4 6 Best Videogames to Start Learning Spanish

The Horizon series has some of the best Spanish dubs you hear in gaming. In a lot of games, the dialog can feel a bit disconnected from the in-game world. However, the Spanish translation is Horizon feels very natural and suits the in-game world well.

Horizon features an addicting gameplay loop in a refreshing open world with RPG elements. Most of the combat is unscripted, so the game always feels like a hunting simulator rather than a shooter. The science-fiction story feels new compared to a sea of other games that seemingly rehash the same concepts.

Its sequel, Forbidden West, features new gameplay mechanics, improved weapons as well as the ability to fly the Sunwing, which you couldn’t do in the first game.

5. Returnal

5 6 Best Videogames to Start Learning Spanish

This game doesn't have a lot of dialog, making it perfect to play for new Spanish learners. Most of the Spanish translations you see will be in text form, making it easy to grasp.

The game starts with Seline, the main character’s ship crash-landing on a mysterious planet. She soon finds herself stuck in a time loop, forcing her to restart her journey after the crash every time she dies. As you progress, you uncover the mysteries of the planet and how it can change with every cycle.
The game is played mainly from a third-person perspective, in a roguelike gameplay loop. This game has a high difficulty curve, meaning it can be very frustrating to play for some gamers.

6. Counter-Strike 2

6 6 Best Videogames to Start Learning Spanish

While this game is purely multiplayer, I've added Counter-Strike 2 to this list for one main reason: its huge Spanish community.

The game’s concept is simple. In every match, there is a terrorist and counter-terrorist side. Every team has the same amount of players and each team has their own objective to complete. With multiple rounds, the game can be very intense.

The community around this game is huge. I started playing with a group from Mexico and had an amazing time with them. Arguably, this has been one of the best ways to learn Spanish since I’ve started to learn how to communicate in the language, rather than just learning words.

While single-player games are a great way to start learning Spanish if you’re a beginner, I recommend playing multiplayer games, especially with a Spanish community if you’re looking to reinforce your language concepts.

Most video games offer some sort of a Spanish translation, whether through menu prompts, subtitle translations, or a full-fledged Spanish dub. If you have any video games you would like to suggest, feel free to leave them in the comments below.
