Those aren't abandoned. These were illegally entered parts of catacombs and sewers which were cut off for obvious reasons.
Rogue "explorers" of catacombs often lose their way and die somewhere down there that's why so many not only catacomb lines but also sewers are cut off to save peoples lives.
