Burton has been sober for 8 years and 5 months, and now is a graduate of University of Washington. And she worked incredibly hard there, so hard that she received the prestigious Truman Scholarship during her junior year, one of only 62 chosen that year out of 773 nominees. She said about returning to college:
“Making the decision to return to school so late in life was a challenge for me. I thought I might be too old to start my life over again and that learning might be harder than I imagined. I decided that I would tackle each challenge I faced with the same drive I tackle mountains. There is no excuse to stop moving forward. If I want to reach the summit, I must keep climbing.”

It’s always important to remember that as random as our time on Earth is, there’s a lot more of it than we think, and there’s always something we can be doing with it. Burton has clearly learned that lesson, and it’s a lesson we can all learn from.
