Greenpoint artist Steve Wasterval is planting easter eggs all over Brooklyn with miniature paintings of local scenes inside the colorful eggs.
1
Wasterval normally paints landscapes on full size canvases for 2-3K a pop, but the big paintings are just too much to give away.
2
“I’ve come up with miniature ones. This is a way to do it more often, so lots of people can try to find art,” he said. “I just thought it would be fun to take it home.”
3
The weekend art hunts have been around for about three years now and Wasterval has no plans of stopping any time soon.
4
Each painting is roughly 2-by-1 ½ inches and feature local cafes, streets, and parks. Wasterval hides them in crevices near the scene they depict and posts the images on his IG page so people know where to look.
5
Back in 2019, he even left decoy eggs around the neighborhood to increase the challenge for those hoping to find one of his miniature pieces.
6
Fans of his work have reached out in an attempt to purchase the mini paintings but he politely lets them know that they are not for sale.
7
“I just happily tell them ‘No, you’ve got to find one,’ ” he said. “They’re special in that way. You can only find them.”
